First Church in Hopkinton is a vibrant and diverse congregation with a strong tradition of choral and instrumental music.  We are seeking a gifted and experienced organist with piano skills to accompany our music program.  The ideal candidate will have a passion for the organ’s place in enhancing worship, familiarity with organ and sacred repertoire, and experience accompanying choirs, soloists, and instrumental ensembles.

Sunday morning worship service at 10 AM.

Wednesday night Choir practices 7:30-9 PM with 9:00 AM Sunday warm-up.
Special services include but not limited to:  Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday.
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

5 paid Sundays off per year

W.B.D. Simmons organ, rebuilt 2002 by Andover Organ Co. 2 manual, 15 stops.

Hardman Peck & Co. grand piano, refurbished 2013.

And people?  Do you want to make a difference in the world by helping to promote justice, equity and compassion in human relations? The First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist (FRSUU) is seeking an accomplished musician, teacher, choral director and organist with church experience and excellent interpersonal skills to direct FRSUU’s music program. We are a vibrant, growing Unitarian Universalist congregation of 437 members and many more friends. We are seeking an engaging and experienced Director of Church Music for this exciting time in the history of our congregation as we grow into being an even greater source of spirituality, community and activism in the lives of individuals and in the larger community. The Music Director will serve as director of the adult choir and is expected to enhance the youth and adult music offerings, increase the diversity of musical expression, and reach out to the larger community. FRSUU views music as an essential aspect of our spiritual life. As a highly visible performance space in this historic town, our music program is an important outreach to the community.

The church has an excellent 2-manual organ with a combination stop action, including both manual draw stops and a multi-level, programmable electronic action. The instrument has important historic roots in the early 19th century, with a major expansion by Hutchings in 1889, renovation by CB Fisk/Andover in 1957 and a full renovation and expansion by A. David Moore in 2012. It now stands as one of the finest in the area, offering the player a rich variety of stops and the ability to support a wide range of the organ literature.

The Director of Church Music is a 0.5 FTE position. The annual salary for this position is based on the Unitarian Universalist Association’s (UUA’s) recommended salary range in a “Midsized III” congregation in geo zone 4 ( and candidate’s qualifications, skills and experience.  Participation in special services such as weddings, memorial services or child dedications will be separately compensated. FRS offers a generous program of benefits including: health, life and long-term disability insurance; and retirement benefits.

Basic responsibilities include providing music for Sunday worship and special holidays, directing regular adult vocal and bell choirs, and planning services with the Pastor.

Our organ is custom built with pipes and console in the balcony. It has 11 ranks, which, with unification and duplexing, expands to 31 stops. The piano is a Yamaha baby grand in excellent condition. Our 4-octave English hand bell set has been recently refurbished.

The church has 150+ members. Part-time hours are 18 to 22 per week. A competitive salary in the high 20’s will be offered to the ideal candidate, commensurate with skill, experience, and education.
